Sunset of Blacks - by Anand Krishna Panicker

Sunset of Blacks

It definitely is a thriller but also a kind of wakeup call to humanity you know. I loved the setting of the book especially Haridas Konrad and his library. He recieves a baby on his doorstep and his world was never the same again.

What I like the most about this book is it is based in modern Bangalore and oh it's slang spoken by Avinash is nostalgic.

I just think the characters could have been more elaborate so you can connect better with them. Also the world of "Gwaeds and Blood thacks" could've been more pronounced and elaborated. I loved the concept and it gives a chill down the spine to think of them even today. It would've been nice to read more about their world inside out.

Mystery is created wonderfully alright but the Reveal doesn't give you the satisfaction and justify the curiosity as much.

Bako, the protagonist, made quiet an impression on me. The cheeky audacious genius who has an inkling of not belonging in this world. Oh he needs to work on his social skills alright. Which makes him a lot more relatable to the nerd inside all of us readers. I would ship him with Millie, the horse girl.

The author has covered a variety of topics from fighter aircraft, tribal civilization, pub culture, ancient science, latest technology, murder investigation, history and what not. It has romance, heartbreak, friendship, mystery, joy and laughter, action and stunts etc. It's a whole bundle of entertainment you won't be bored at all.

The writing mostly seemed like it was thought through in a native language and then translated to English. That's not bad it makes sense considering the plot and setting. Native readers might love the dialect.

It's a very interesting concept of Gwaeds rising again, the blood thacks, the blacks and oh Mr. PS, the weaknesses they feed on and their mysterious queen. It's a world in It's own. The gore of it all and Orlog's demeaner is so scary it still bothers me in the dark.

I don't know what the author is thinking but I'm definitely expecting a sequel to this book. Why just a sequel, a whole series.

All in all it was an entertaining and gripping read, the book gets 3/5 stars.
